Woodford Double Oaked. Woodford Reserve. Woodford Batch Proof. Gentleman Jack Whiskey starts with moderate honey and graham cracker sweetness followed by charred wood, crushed peanuts, and uncooked rice. Is a gentleman supposed to be kind of bland and nondescript? Swirling releases the same honey and vanilla sweetness, as well as slightly under-baked bread, grain husk, charred oak, and crushed peanuts.
The alcohol gets gently stirred-up, but stays very calm. Fruit notes that are usually found in more complex whiskeys, are virtually absent in Gentleman Jack Whiskey. It just smells so young, undeveloped, thin, and kind of bland. Gentleman Jack Whiskey is also very calm on my mouth. A Gentleman can be quiet and subtle, but this is just boring and not good.
Honey caramel sweetness remains on the finish with charred wood and mint, with a slight fruitiness that quickly disappears. The crazy thing is that it drinks like such a cheap and rushed whiskey, yet is still priced the same as far better bourbons such as Elijah Craig Small Batch , Buffalo Trace , and even Old Forester 86 Proof.
The prohibition years proved a challenge, though. Kentucky enacted their own version of prohibition 10 years earlier than the rest of the United States. Lem Moltow led the test case to challenge the constitutionality of the law, but lost in court when the judge upheld the law.
He tried to move production to neighboring states, but none of the product made at those facilities was ever made available for sale due to issues with the quality of the product. Lem Moltow, now elected as a Tennessee state senator, led the effort to repeal the state prohibition on alcohol and was instrumental in the passage of the repeal that allowed his distillery to reopen. Lem Moltow died in , leaving the distillery to his family.
They sold the brand and the distillery in to the Brown-Forman corporation, a family owned business that is one of the largest producers of whiskey in the United States and also owns brands such as Woodford Reserve and Old Forester.
Originally selling 90 proof whiskey, the Brown-Forman company started lowering the alcohol content to 86 proof in and again to 80 proof in as an attempt to reduce the production cost and the taxes paid on each bottle.
Once distilled, the spirit is filtered through a 10 foot stack of charcoal produced from sugar maple trees. Once aged to perfection, the spirit is tasted and some of the barrels are selected to go through a second charcoal filtering.
These twice filtered bottles are then packaged as Gentleman Jack. Instead of the square botttle, they opted for a more flask-like shape that tapers outwards from the base and then rolls inwards with a gentle sloping shoulder.
According to some sources, Gentleman Jack is aged longer than the regular Jack Daniels. Some dried fruit and marzipan. Spicy oak, caramel and vanilla sweetness and faint hints of wood smoke. It has a sophisticated edge to it. Palate Toasted oak and butterscotch sweetness. Hints of vanilla, overripe cherries and nuts. Something like sour cherries and cereal on the palate. It is quite an oily whiskey. Mellow and smooth.
Smoky oak and hints of charcoal. Herbal notes are coming through mixed with chocolate, rich dark roast coffee, hints of pepper and cinnamon intertwined with cherry sweetness and vanilla. The palate is bold and quite a big mouthful.
