In order to obtain it from Birna in the first place, you have to ask her if she has ever had a bad deal in her business: If you ask her if she has ever had a bad deal after asking about her business, she will explain how she came to possess a seemingly useless dragon claw. The back door only opens by taking the Helm of Yngol from the head of the skeleton sitting on the throne in Yngol's Room. There is a bug that prevents completing the dungeon, while not hampering the quest for retrival of the helm, where instead of the ghostly form of Yngol after whom the Barrow is named you will face a powerful Draugr instead.

The Helm of Yngol will thus be found in the chest in front of the throne in the last room, instead of looted from the head of Yngol's Skeleton. Apparently, the looting of the Helm from the Skeleton is the trigger for the last door to open. An early indication for the bug, is if in front of the Barrow's entrance there is no book called "Yngol and the Sea Ghosts" to be found amongst some alchemical ingredients.

Also if getting chased by Windhelm guards it may not be possible to complete the puzzles. Can't move pillars, dragon claw will not work due to glitch.

Last Edited: 4 Nov am. Was this guide helpful? Something about placing it back in Yngol's chamber, I don't know. What was I thinking? Even if it were true, I'm not setting foot in some ancient tomb, filled with who knows what. Nobody in Winterhold will guide you to the Barrow, as it is located much closer to Windhelm, where guards will provide directions and a bit of fair warning: "Across the river to the northeast lies Yngol Barrow.

Steer clear of that foul place, lest the walking dead claim you as their own. The exterior of the Barrow is unguarded, but a strange altar with a few ingredients and the book Yngol and the Sea-Ghosts welcomes you.

Reading through the book reveals that the Barrow is the final resting place of Ysgramor 's son Yngol, who was killed by Sea-Ghosts during Ysgramor's return to Tamriel. The first tunnel is narrow and covered in ice so proceed forward until you reach a cauldron. A small beeping sound can be heard and a light-blue orb will jump up, following you around to lead the path. As you proceed forward another orb will soon join from a sarcophagus, then a third, all of them floating towards the same goal.

In the first real chamber, a Dead Scholar lies headdown in front of a sealed-off gate and a handle. Pushing the handle will cause a dart trap to trigger, making it obvious what killed the scholar. Search his inventory for his Notes on Yngol Barrow which includes his transcription of the many carvings around the chamber. Look around and you will see four alcoves, one with a throne and three of them with rotating pillars. There's an alcove with running water, one with sunlight, and one overgrown by plants.

Check out the scholar's transcripts and rotate the pillars as follows:. Pull the handle and the gate will disappear, allowing access to yet another light-blue orb to join the party.
